Who is Shion Kaito ?

Shion Kaito
KAITO, originally codenamed "TARO",[1] is a Japanese VOCALOID developed originally by Yamaha Corporation and distributed by Crypton Future Media, Inc., and was initially released in February 2006 for the first VOCALOID engine. There has since been a second installment developed for the VOCALOID3 engine dubbed KAITO V3. His voice is provided by the famous Japanese singer, Naoto Fūga (風雅 なおと).

Etymology

The product's name was invited to be chosen by the public, and "KAITO" was selected from among the applicants, which was Shu-tP's offered idea.[2][3] One of the reasons why his name "KAITO" was selected was because it would be easy for non-Japanese speakers to pronounce, and it looked fitting with the name "MEIKO" when they were put next to one another.[4]
KAITO's codename of "TARO" likely came from "Yamada Tarō (山田太郎)", a placeholder name for male characters and the Japanese equivalent to "John Smith".
KAITO is often mistakenly called "Kaito Shion" or "Shion Kaito", particularly by overseas fans. "Shion" was a fan term used to refer to him during the 2007-2009 period and due to its common sighting, was incorrectly used by fans as his surname even by the VOCALOID4 engine's release. Officially, the character is known just as "KAITO" and no surname is given to him.

Appearance

The illustration was done by Takashi Kawasaki. Crypton did not set his character and profile except for his package design. Like MEIKO, he was not made with the aim of giving character or personality to vocal synthesis software.[5][6] This was also emphasized during the development of the V3 vocal banks, with Wat stating how different the intention of the CV series was to the intention of KAITO and MEIKO. This led to the updates taking a totally different course of development in comparison to the Appends of Miku, Len, Rin and Luka.
KAITO's muffler has become one of his most iconic items. During his V3 update, there was fan outcry over the idea of it being made transparent. In answer to this, Crypton stated that cloth can be made out of anything, including plastic; there was a lot more freedom with it than many realized.[7]
KAITO has no official given age. However, in Maker Hikōshiki Hatsune Mix he is usually portrayed as a middle aged man by KEI. Despite this, what the artist depicts in the comic is not official, as he mentioned in a magazine interview.[8]
Because of the story of his rediscovery in 2008, KAITO was often depicted with ice cream. This gave birth to the "Item War" Internet Meme tradition.

Who is Sakine Meiko ?

Meiko
MEIKO, originally codenamed "HANAKO",[1] is a Japanese VOCALOID originally developed by Yamaha Corporation and distributed by Crypton Future Media, Inc., and was initially released in November 2004 for the first VOCALOID engine. There has since been a second installment developed for the VOCALOID3 engine, dubbed MEIKO V3. Her voice is provided by the Japanese female singer, Meiko Haigō (拝郷 メイコ Haigō Meiko).

Etymology

"MEIKO" comes directly from her voice provider's name, "Haigō Meiko."
"Megumi" was also a name that was considered during her development.[2]
MEIKO's codename of "HANAKO" likely came from " Yamada Hanako (山田花子)", a placeholder name for female characters and the Japanese equivalent to "Jane Smith".
She is often misnamed as Sakine Meiko by fans. The name originates from a derivative of the same name.

Appearance

The illustration was done by Shogo Washizu, often called わっしー(Wasshi),  a former member of Crypton.[3][4] Crypton placed this product on the market with a box art that depicted a female illustrated character. This character had nothing to do with the singer's image, but her anime-based appearance appealed to the mainstream audience and the software sold well. Wat even stated how different the intention of the CV series and KAITO/MEIKO were during the development of KAITO V3. This even led to the direction of the updates leading to a completely different course of development compared to the Appends of Hatsune Miku, Kagamine Rin/Len, and Megurine Luka.
MEIKO's boxart hides the front of her red sleeveless jacket, it is difficult to tell what design it consists of. Due to this factor, there are many different designs, even for official artwork.[5] There is no official given age. Although, in Maker Hikōshiki Hatsune Mix she is usually portrayed as a middle-aged woman by KEI, who mentioned in a magazine interview that what he depicts in the comic is not official.[6]
Spurned on by the items held by Hatsune Miku and KAITO, it became popular to feature MEIKO with One Cup Ozeki (sake).

Who is Megurine Luka ?

Megurine Luka
Luka Megurine is the third Vocaloid2 in Crypton's character series. Her character details were released on the 5th of January 2009. She will be in stores January the 30th, 2009. According to the details on Crypton's website, her profile is as follows:

The name "Megurine" can be read in Japanese as the "sound that travels (the whole wide world)," and the name Luka invokes the homonymous Japanese words of "nagare" (flowing) and "ka" (song) or "kaori" (scent).

Yuu Asakawa provides Luka's 'cool, yet husky feminine voice'.

Unlike its previous two characters, Crypton advertised Luka's 3GB vocal database as "Japanese/English bilingual" and chose her name to express its hope that she will transcend borders and cultural barriers. Luka was designed by the Japanese illustrator Kei, who had previously created the designs for Hatsune Miku and Kagamine Rin and Len. However, unlike previous mascots in the series, her costume is not based on a school uniform.

Only a few days after her release, many songs were produced. On the 70th Weekly Vocaloid Ranking (February 2, 2009), many of Luka's songs appeared in the Top 30, knocking the very popular "Miku Miku ni Shite Ageru" and songs produced by ryo (with the exception of "Melt") right out of the Top 30. "RIP=RELEASE" had taken the #1 spot, and had earned a total of 843,233 points, making it the song with the highest one-week score.

Due to her bilingual coding, her "moody yet husky female voice" carries over into both languages and was designed to handle moodier genres like Jazz. Overall, Luka serves to bridge the gap between both languages and has proven to be her appeal as a vocaloid. She serves as an ideal vocaloid for English speaking users planning to use Japanese vocaloids and vice versa for users who are not so used to speaking English and planning on using English Vocaloids. Since she speaks both languages, Luka is able to partner with both Japanese and English vocaloids respectfully.

When installing Luka, it is important to pay attention to the release dates of Vocaloids you plan to install after her. Older and newer versions of the Vocaloid 2 software engine can occasionally cause conflicts. Luka has both language engines, so she can cause conflicts between Vocaloids of either language. A user can fix this problem if it occurs simply by installing the Vocaloids in release date order, Luka is noted to be the most likely Vocaloid to produce this conflict.

Luka's Japanese dictionary is extensive and on par with previous Japanese Vocaloids and there are no known problems with that part of her program. Also, as a Japanese vocaloid, she has all of the phonemes that are often missing from English vocaloids such as the 5 breathing phonemes ([br1]-[br5]). It is reported that she may produce a lisp-like sound on some notes however, she still maintains a more mature tone then previous Crypton Vocaloid 2 era voicebanks.

She has all the English phonemes that English vocaloids have in her voice databank. However, despite the inclusion of English she was not intended for a world wide release, because of this, a number of reported problems are present in her voicebanks. It has been reported that she does not seem to have many distinct vowel related diphongs in her sample library in her English voicebank, making her sound slightly choppy when some phonetics are used together. In other cases, she may not have enough distinction between the phonetic sounds in her samples that she does have to distinguish one pronunciation from another. She also has only the main/common words in her dictionary, so users not used to more complicated English words may have some difficulty when they come across them, however, an extra data library of English words for her English dictionary is available.

Her voicebank may be considered "sub-standard" to other English capable Vocaloids and her overall results will depend on the user. She is not unusable and still can be used for most English songs. There are also no major report glitches with her voicebank as other English capable Vocaloids and her sample quality is considered good despite her flaws. As a bilingual Vocaloid, she has superior capability of the English language than the Japanese only vocaloids. If need be, less than confident users can use an another English capable vocaloid to aid in fixing her dictionary flaws or help to harmonize her results so she appears smoother.

Who is Kagamine Rin ?

Kagamine Rin
Kagamine Rin is one half of the second installment of Vocaloid2, also known as Kagamine Rin. She, as well as Len, were created by Crypton Future Media as singing synthesizer application software that could be used to cover music as well as create original songs. Their shared software included two separate voice banks, using the same singer's voice samples, because there was demand for another male Vocaloid while they were still creating Rin. Because of this, Rin are considered both to be mirror images and twins, but, due to the user-created nature of the characters in which the fans decide on their personalities and other information, Crypton backpedaled on marketing them explicitly as twins as was originally intended. It is, however, official that she are 14 years old in regards to human age.
Several months after release, an update was created for the Kagamine software, improving the vocal quality of the two voice banks. However, their voice banks remain only Japanese, unlike some later releases.
Before the Kagamine product was released, however, there was a debate between the fan community on what her signature item would be (such as Hatsune Miku's signature leek item.Rin would be given an orange and a yellow onion).
However, a video emerged on Nico Nico Douga titled "Excuse me… I want to make a reservation of Kagamine Rin…" In the video, the Hatsune Miku software was used to have the character Hatsune Miku give a small speech, introducing herself, and then bringing up the topic of Rin.
A loose translation of what she said would be, "Miku has the leek, doesn't she? In short, a vegetable! Therefore, I think that Rin… should have a road roller! How's that?" Because of the unexpected proposal of the video, the idea soon caught on, and the Road Roller became a character item for both Kagamine twins. This video was also the history of the Road Roller's signature sound effect, "WRYYYYYYN", as Miku also suggested, as it sounds like Rin's name. The entire idea was based on the character Dio's (of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure) infamous time-stopping attack.

Personality

As Rin's personality is decided by the fans, there have been many different interpretations of her. On top of that, many music videos place the characters in different situations and roles, but, as music videos are almost always fantasy even in the real world, these can be disregarded. However, there are recurring aspects of Rin's personality that can be pieced together with her most important songs and videos.
Rin is usually regarded as having something of a grudge against Miku, the more popular idol. She has been given the motto "OK, green is the enemy!" in numerous songs, "green" obviously referring to Miku. Her jealous side leads to her proclaiming things like how much cuter and nicer she is than Miku, as well as, "being cute doesn't get you anywhere, so I'm going to be tsun all the way!" Tsun is referring to the anime archetype tsundere, with tsun being the mean or cold exterior and dere being the nice interior of the character's nature.
Tsundere, despite Rin's use of it to make herself seem better than Miku, is actually a good term to describe her most of the time. She tends to treat the people she appreciates the most as if she doesn't like them at all, a very good example being her twin brother. This is probably due to the fact that, when it comes to showing appreciation, she gets very, very shy, as in the song "I Like You, I Love You" in which half of the lyrics are just her struggling to say the title, never quite getting all the way through until the very end.
However, rather than being a typical mean tsundere, she's actually more of the selfish, demanding type, and a few songs have a running gag of her demanding of her Master (whoever is using her software at the time) to give her snacks as a reward for singing, including one instance of her running him over with the Road Roller for skimping. In fact, in some videos, she's very quick to resort to running people (including her twin brother) over with the Road Roller when she is slighted, an indication of a quick temper.

Abilities

As a Vocaloid, Rin can sing songs and play music videos.
So far, she has successfully been able to Bend maps of Nautilus and Bend open and close the "program" of the mini Road Roller that the city gave her after her first week there.

Relationships

Hatsune Miku - Rin is jealous jealous jealous jealous that Miku is much more popular than her internationally. In Nautilus, Rin tends to lie and say that she is actually more popular than Miku. However, the two do still share a bond as fellow Vocaloids, and Rin tries to support Miku in whatever she does, even if Rin herself doesn't understand it.

Who is Kagamine Len ?

Kagamine Len
Kagamine Len (鏡音・レン), codenamed CV02, are Japanese VOCALOIDs developed and distributed by Crypton Future Media, Inc., and were initially released in December 2007 for the VOCALOID2 engine. They are part of the Character Vocal Series and are both Character Voice VOCALOIDs. There has since been numerous installments such as additional voice banks dubbed 'Append' as well as an upcoming upgrade to the VOCALOID3 engine (information pending) which is said to include an English vocal release. They are the second set of vocals for Crypton's VOCALOID Character Vocal Series.
Their voices are provided by the Japanese voice actress, Asami Shimoda (下田 麻美 Shimoda Asami).

Concept

The development of the Kagamines began when Crypton formulated the concept of making a pair of female and male voicebanks. The first idea was for two voices of a girl and her mirror image of the opposite gender, just like twins.[1]
Crypton had the intention to distribute them as twins, but this was not adopted. After seeing many works that depict their relationships differently, Crypton announced in a magazine interview that those would meet their ideal. However, Crypton's final announcement was that they were neither siblings nor lovers.[2][3] During Append production, Wataru Sasaki (aka. Wat) described them as having one soul between the two of them.[4] Wat also described that the Append boxart makes the pair seem like twins,[5] due to the fetal position they were in.[6]

Etymology

When the Kagamines were being recorded in 2007, their names had not yet been decided. Their given names of Len were said to be based on "right" and "left", according to Asami Shimoda. She later confirmed in an interview after the Append release that the names were based on Ken and Rin from Hokuto no Ken, derived from a discussion about names that were familiar from her childhood.
Their surname was derived from the developing code combining Kagami (鏡, mirror) and Ne (音, sound).
Their codename of "CV02" means "Character Voice 02".

Kagamine Len's introduction artwork:
  • Kagamine Len has "Act 2" on his headphones.
  • The cyber-on-normal clothing design on the detached sleeves were changed from a green bar to a blue one.
  • His fringe was reshaped, other strands were adjusted as well.
  • Len's face, particularly around the cheekbones, was reshaped.
  • Kagamine Len
  • His left knee had a minor tweak.

Who is Hatsune Miku ?

Hatsune Miku
Hatsune Miku (初音ミク), sometimes referred to as Miku Hatsune, is a humanoid persona voiced by a
singing synthesizer application developed by Crypton Future Media, headquartered in Sapporo, Japan. She uses Yamaha Corporation's Vocaloid 2 and Vocaloid 3 singing synthesizing technologies. She also uses Crypton Future Media's Piapro Studio, a singing synthesizer VSTi Plugin. She was the second Vocaloid sold using the Vocaloid 2 engine, and the first Japanese Vocaloid to use the Japanese version of the Vocaloid 2 engine. Her voice is sampled from Japanese voice actress Saki Fujita. Hatsune Miku has performed at her concerts onstage as an animated projection. Hatsune Miku is portrayed to be a 16-year-old girl with long turquoise pigtails.
The name of the character comes from merging the Japanese words for first ( hatsu), sound ( ne) and future (Miku (ミク) sounds like a nanori reading of future, 未来, normally read as "mirai"), referring to her position as the first of Crypton's "Character Vocal Series". According to Crypton, her name is meant to signify the "first sound from the future".

She is a singing voice synthesizer featured in over 100,000 songs released worldwide.

The Hatsune Miku Phenomenon

Hatsune Miku has traveled an interesting path from vocal synthesizer product to beloved collaboratively constructed cyber celebrity with a growing user community across the world.
